Changing the world by changing diapers
Why Cloth Diapers?
Culturally we are led to believe that an individual or a family can not begin to have an impact on the woes of the world- especially environmental…In reality, that is exactly who will make a difference: real people, taking simple actions in their daily lives.
For our Mama Planet’s health
Every year Americans toss over 28 billion disposable diapers in our landfills!
Since a disposable diaper takes an estimated 300-500 years to decompose, every disposable diaper that has ever been thrown away still exists, leaching waste and chemicals into the earth.
An enormous amount of chemicals and resources are used to produce a single throw-away diaper. Disposable diapers generate sixty times more solid waste and use twenty times more raw materials, like crude oil and wood pulp. Manufacture and use of disposable diapers amounts to 2.3 times more water wasted than cloth.
Even unbleached disposables are just that: trash.
All our Vermont Diaper Company products are made from sustainable domestically raised and milled organic fibers. We love and support the farm families that raise our cotton while loving the planet!
For your family’s health
It is a fact that disposable diapers are loaded with toxic chemicals such as:
Dioxin: an extremely toxic by-product of the paper-bleaching process. It is a carcinogenic chemical, recognized by the EPA as the most toxic of all cancer-linked chemicals. Tragically, is banned in most countries, but not the U.S..
Tributyl-tin (TBT):a pollutant known to cause hormonal problems in humans and animals.
Sodium polyacrylate: a type of super absorbent polymer, which becomes a gel-like substance when wet. It is widely known to exacerbate and even cause asthma. Something to consider with the rising tide of respiratory illness that has plagued young children for the past 25 years…
Lots of little ones have allergic reactions to the fragrances and other creepy additives in disposables. We are aware of the big risks in the major chemicals but what don’t we know yet about the other “ingredients”? Yikes!
Save money
Cloth is an initial investment that pays off soundly.
Disposables cost an average of $2500-4000 (depending on what brand you choose and where you live) over the course of one child's diapering years. Cloth diapers not only cost less (even going all organic), but they can be used over and over siblings or on lucky hand- me -down recipients with only a handful of replacements from wear and tear.
The water and the electricity usage is minimal. Line dry and use the sunny goodness for free. Wash in a front loader or freestanding hand crank unit and save, save, save. No expensive bags of trash for curbside pickup or pay to drop at the landfill.
You can even take your gently used cloth to the consignment shop for credit, donate to a non profit or other community service, or sell to a new mama who wants to try low cost and you will re-earn your investment (and a gold star for being so fabulous to the planet!).
Potty training is easier, and happens earlier
Cloth diapered children are more aware of their body’s natural processes and rhythms because they can actually feel the difference between a wet and a dry diaper. Disposables which chemically create a “dry feel” do not allow children to become in tune with the cues that ease the training process.
For your baby’s comfort
Imagine wearing paper and plastic underwear twenty four hours a day? Is it any wonder your little one would rather run around bare bottomed? The feel and comfort on baby’s skin of soft natural fabric is often a mother’s greatest encouragement to chose cloth!
Daycares need to experience the power of green families
Parents hold the power and should be deciding what is best for the health and comfort of their baby and not under any peer pressure /daycare pressure. This is one of the very first choices you will make from your heart for your little one. In my experience, daycares are receptive to cloth. You just need to educate your provider. Diaper pins and plastic pants are a thing of the past. Snap and velcro closure covers make changing very easy. Wet carry sacks transport dirty gear home with no moisture or smell worries. There are still so many cloth diapering myths and misconceptions out there. Most providers are amazed at how easy it is and they will thank you for keeping thousands of disposables out of their trash barrels.
